Mihku Paul

Mihku Paul is a Wolastoqeyik poet and visual artist born and raised on the Penobscot river. Her family is from Kingsclear First Nations.  Mihku received both a traditional education from her Grandfather as well as a formal education in white public schools.  She holds a BA and MFA from the University of Southern Maine. Mihku’s one-woman show, “Look Twice:  The Waponaki in Image and Verse” was shown at the Abbe Museum and the Glickman Library.  The exhibit combined original art, archival photo images and poems on twelve panels designed to mediate the dominant western gaze.  She is also the author of 20th Century PowWow Playland.  Her art was selected for a cover of MELUS (Mulit-Ethnic Literatures of the United States) and her poetry can be found in POEISIS, Dawnland Voices, I Was Indian, Port City Poems, and most recently in Enough! and Wait (Littoral Books).  Mihku lives and works in Portland, Maine.

Mihku Paul est une poète et artiste visuelle wolastoqey qui est née et a grandi le long de la rivière Penobscot. Sa famille est issue de la Première Nation de Kingsclear. Mihku Paul a reçu une éducation traditionnelle de son grand-père ainsi qu’une éducation officielle dans les écoles publiques des Blancs. Elle est titulaire d’un baccalauréat et d’une maîtrise en beaux-arts de l’University of Southern Maine. Le « one-woman show » de Mihku Paul, intitulé Look Twice: The Waponaki in Image and Verse, a été présenté au Abbe Museum et à la Glickman Library. L’exposition composée d’œuvres d’art originales, de photos d’archives et de poèmes était disposée sur douze panneaux conçus pour faire réfléchir sur le regard occidental dominant et pour le nuancer en quelque sorte. Mikhu Paul est également l’auteure de 20th Century PowWow Playland. Son art a été sélectionné pour figurer sur la couverture de MELUS (Multi-Ethnic Literatures of the United States), et ses poèmes se retrouvent dans les publications suivantes : POEISIS, Dawnland Voices, I Was Indian, Port City Poems, et plus récemment dans Enough ! et Wait (Littoral Books). Mihku Paul vit et travaille à Portland, dans l’État du Maine.
